Butterfly Bushes
Butterfly bushes are popular and hardy from Zone 5 south to Zone 9. Butterfly bushes often grow to 10 or 12 ft. high. They gro well in almost any soil and prefer moist ground, but will also do well in dryer spots. They need plenty of sun, but will be fine with some shade in the warmer areas. All this tells you that this plant is a tough one, and should be easy to grow in your garden. A well-grown specimen can be a magnificent fountain of flowers, since the stems with heavy flower clusters tend to arch in all directions.
Crepe Myrtles
The Crepe Myrtle originated from Asia but has naturalized in the southeastern U.S. and is a favorite for North Carolina landscape design. There are many varieties that vary is size and in bloom color. The blossoms are continuous throughout the summer and early fall. Crepe Myrtles grow and bloom best in full sun.
Hydrangea
All hydrangeas grow well in locations with morning sun and afternoon shade. They require rich soil, and some varieties respond better to the use of compost and rotted manure than to commercial fertilizer. They prefer an evenly moist soil, but do not tolerate boggy conditions. Nursery-grown hydrangeas can be planted any time.
